Canada is a diverse and geographically complex market. Understanding it requires data that reflects not only who lives in an area, but also where people work, how they spend, and how communities differ at the local level. That is especially challenging in rural areas, where traditional postal geographies may cover large and loosely defined delivery regions.
AGS is pleased to announce the release of our updated Canadian database, developed in collaboration with Exceed Analysis. The new release includes updated demographic and economic estimates, expanded Daytime Population tables, and a new postal code-level geography designed to support more precise customer and market analysis.
The database provides a broad view of Canadian households, consumers, businesses, and communities. Its content includes current-year demographic estimates, five-year projections of key variables, Consumer Spending, Household Finance, CrimeRisk, Business Counts, and Daytime Population.
The release also includes Panorama CanAm, AGS’s cross-national segmentation system, which allows organizations to analyze and compare consumer segments across Canada and the United States. Dimensions Canada adds further detail about the interests, behaviors, lifestyles, and attitudes of Canadian consumers. Together, these datasets help users move beyond basic demographic characteristics to develop a richer understanding of the people who live, work, and spend within a market.
One of the most significant enhancements in this release is the expansion of the Canadian Daytime Population database. Traditional demographic data generally describes an area based on its residential population. While that information is essential, it does not necessarily reflect the population present during the day. Employment centers, retail districts, remote-work communities, and areas with large numbers of commuters can look very different during working hours than their residential statistics suggest.
The enhanced tables include estimates of employment by industry and occupation based on place of work. This added detail helps users understand not only how many people work in an area, but also the types of jobs and industries represented there. For retailers, restaurants, commercial real estate professionals, financial institutions, and economic development organizations, that information can provide important context about the customers, workers, and businesses present during the day.
The updated methodology also specifically accounts for people who work from home. Rather than assigning these workers to a separate workplace location, they are included at their place of residence. As remote and hybrid work continue to reshape daily population patterns, correctly locating at-home workers provides a more accurate picture of the population present in residential communities during the day.
Another major addition is the introduction of the postal code layer. Postal codes can be extremely useful for customer and market analysis, but producing reliable estimates at this level is not as simple as transferring data from a larger geography. This is particularly true in rural Canada, where delivery areas may be large, irregular, and only loosely defined.
Using the latest Postal Code Conversion File, postal delivery statistics, and building footprints, AGS and Exceed Analysis conducted extensive modeling to improve estimates for rural postal codes. This work establishes postal code-level base counts, including population in households, household counts, and income. Other variables are then apportioned from the dissemination area using those modeled base counts.
The result is a more useful small-area geography for applications that begins with customer-supplied postal codes. A retailer, for example, can use postal codes collected at the point of sale to estimate the demographic characteristics of its shoppers, identify customer concentrations, and better understand a store’s trade area. Postal code data can also support direct-mail campaigns, customer profiling, market comparison, location analysis, and the enrichment of existing customer records with neighborhood-level characteristics.
With expanded Daytime Population detail and the addition of modeled postal code estimates, the updated Canadian database offers a more complete view of where Canadians live, work, and spend. These enhancements give organizations greater flexibility to analyze customers and markets at the geographic level best suited to the decisions they need to make.
