Non-Resident Population Data

See Beyond Local Residents with Advanced Visitor Modeling

The AGS Non-Resident Population (NRP) dataset estimates the number of overnight visitors across the U.S. by season, purpose, and lodging type.

Unlike traditional datasets focused only on where people live, NRP helps you understand where people go. Whether they’re staying at a resort, visiting family, or working short-term jobs, these non-residents shape demand in ways permanent populations can’t capture.

Built on 30+ demand drivers—from amusement parks and convention centers to oilfields and college towns—NRP offers a fine-grained, quarterly view of how and where people move.

What’s Included

  • Average annual and quarterly totals for non-resident populations
  • Detailed segmentation by business, leisure, and migrant worker categories
  • Travel accommodation breakdowns: hotels, second homes, campgrounds, RVs, and friends/family
  • Seasonal variation modeling based on 30+ demand factors

NRP Methodology

NRP is based on a distance-decay location-allocation model that accounts for over 30 demand drivers, including employment hubs, natural attractions, cultural sites, and more.

Each factor is weighted differently based on traveler type, and seasonal variation is modeled to reflect real-world tourism shifts.

Accommodation types are matched to demand using national tourism data, with geographic constraints ensuring the data reflects real supply limits. The result is a fine-grained, quarterly view of visitor volume at the block group level.
