As we gear up for the 2023B release coming in early November, we wanted to let you know what to expect. Here are the highlights of the 2023B release.

Puerto Rico!

AGS now has data for Puerto Rico! This first release will cover the basics for 2020, which includes most of our core estimates. In total, there are about 730 variables, including some business and daytime data. It also includes population by age and sex, education, household structure, labor force, income, dwelling types / age / occupancy status, etc. By next fall, we plan to have the full current year and five-year projections.

Religious Affiliation

Our religious affiliation data has gotten an update, based on the decennial census. Unlike others who carry this data, we modeled the data to the block group level using the location of religious establishments classified by type of religion, paying attention to the religious customs of selected groups (e.g., Jewish, Muslim, Mennonite, Amish) and allocated what is a county level database to the local level. This data is useful for many retailers who cater to specific religious groups, including grocery stores.

Labor Force Characteristics

We added labor force status by age – 16-19, 20-21, 22-24, then five-year groups thereafter to age 75+. This allows us to calculate labor force participation and unemployment rates by age, which is very useful for analyzing local labor market conditions, crime rates, etc.

Housing Characteristics

Our expanded vacant dwellings data now includes the reason for vacancy (e.g., for rent, seasonal use, etc.). This helps us to distinguish between temporarily and permanently vacant and it gives us a better handle on tourist activity via seasonal/occasional use vacancies.

Urban/Rural Population

If you are looking for clearer definitions of areas, new data splits population into areas within urbanized areas and outside of urbanized areas.

Economic Development

For those in the economic development space, new data on housing and urban development qualified tracts will be available this fall. These tracts are eligible for special consideration from the Federal and many state level governments for development and redevelopment.

Geography

The 2020 block groups have been updated to the 2022 boundaries, including a complete redefinition of Connecticut’s. In addition, we now carry several geography vintages for block groups, tracts, and counties (2014, 2017, 2020, and the new 2022) if you have different needs. Users will receive the 2022 version by default, so if you would like a different vintage, please let us know.
