Consumer Expenditures
The consumer expenditure model has been completely revised to utilize the AGS Synthetic Household model, yielding results which are much better able to capture the differences in small area expenditure patterns. Newly available within the model are expenditures related to taxation and pensions, with significant enhancements to the food away from home group.
The data structure has been reorganized by flattening the number of hierarchical levels to three, and gift expenditures have been shifted into the individual categories to ensure that users account for gift spending, especially on infant’s and children’s clothing.
To ensure that users are not using variables which have been radically changed, the labels for the consumer expenditure series have been completely revised. A translation table will be made available, but there are many instances where categories are collapsed or redistributed amongst others, making one-to-one mapping impossible.

Consumer Finances (Assets and Debts)
We have added two distribution tables –
- Households by total net worth, ranging from negative to over ten million
- Households by net worth excluding principal residence
These tables can assist users in finding areas where there are high percentages of households at risk or areas where there are high net worth households who may be suitable for high risk investment vehicles.

Disposable and Discretionary Income
The core income estimates have been expanded to include total household income, disposable income, and discretionary income. These tables are all available as average and median values, as well as the household distribution.
Disposable income is total income less taxes that include federal, state, and local income taxes as well as social security deductions.
Discretionary income is income which is available after expenditures on the following:
- Food and grocery items, excluding food away from home
- Shelter costs, including utilities and insurance
- Vehicle loans and leases
- Alimony and child support payments
- Health care insurance
While health care insurance is not typically included in discretionary income, recent legislation which requires all individuals to carry health insurance suggests that it is no longer discretionary spending.

Parcel Data and Land Use Mapping
Parcel data will be available via API or data download. Included are parcel geometries and characteristics.
A national land use database is available in a range of standard GIS formats. Land use is determined at the parcel level using a wide variety of sources and simplified through the dissolving of boundaries between adjacent parcels with the same land use. The result is a national land use map that is compact and easily integrated into site maps and other presentation materials.
Puerto Rico
The data series for Puerto Rico will be available using the latest ACS statistics.
