We are excited to announce the release of a new databases for Canada, BusinessCounts and Point of Interest (POI) data. These new databases will nicely compliment the other Canadian data that we currently carry. For more information on these new databases, keep reading.
BusinessCounts is a geographic summary database of business establishments and employees for 1.15 million businesses and 13.5 million employees. In addition, the establishment/firm level database is available either for all sectors, or for the consumer/retail groups (110 NAICS codes).
The database is available for all standard levels of geography including dissemination area (DA). Significant effort has been put into ensuring that companies are known by trade rather than legal name wherever possible.
The primary variables available include:
- Total Establishments, Employees
- Employment by occupation
- Establishments and employees by major industry (21 groups)
- Establishments and employees by group (120 groups) at various levels of NAICS detail
- Detailed classification (424 categories) which includes categories at the 3 through 8 level NAICS classification.
- Retail and consumer sector employees and establishments (110 categories).
The occupational classification is similar to the residential classification for Canada, but in fact uses the US business counts classification:
The Point of Interest (POI) database includes, for each firm/establishment in the database:
- Name
- Address
- Dissemination Block
- Latitude/Longitude
- NAICS coding and description
- SIC coding and description
- Estimated employees
The database is available for either the 110-category retail and consumer grouping or for all firms.

- FSA
- Census Subdivision
- Census Division
- Metropolitan Area
