In case you missed it, it was announced earlier this week that scientists in Italy have found a cave on the moon that could unlock the key to humans living on the moon in 20-30 years. Where people go, businesses are sure to follow. Do we think people will be living on the moon in 2050? Anything is possible. But, as we like to do on our blog, we decided to theorize: what would site selection look like if you started from scratch?
First, something to know about the cave. It is apparently so deep (about 140-185 yards), that jet packs would be needed to get in and out, so we are assuming that the first specialty retailer (outside of things like grocery stores and pharmacies) will be a jet pack store. While the first citizens will likely bring their own from earth, new residents, and freshly turned 16 year olds clamoring for freedom, will likely need to purchase their own when they get to their new homes.
So, where would the new jet pack store choose as a location? Of course, we don’t know yet who will be living on the moon, but we would theorize that they are likely to be well educated (surely they will need scientists on the moon), have considerable income (home prices in a cave on the moon just sounds unattainable) and be on the younger side of the age spectrum (we don’t imagine anyone is spending their golden years in a new country, let alone on the moon). We’d assume that this group of people would likely shop at Apple, wear athleisure from Lululemon, and drive a Tesla back on Earth.
Based on this set of demographics, we could build out a few things for site selection purposes. A Panorama profile would be invaluable to understand our consumers and their behaviors and identify neighborhoods where our customers live. If we know of similar brands that our ideal customers shop at, site signature could be a useful tool to select the correct site for our store.
Of course, this all depends on demographic data being available on the moon, so we would need a census to understand where these people live to determine a trade area to choose a decent site for our jetpack store. Realistically, even if people could live on the moon in 2050, it would potentially be decades later that demographic data would be available, and with a mix of residents from various countries, a central government would need to emerge to collect the demographic data.
If indeed people are living on the moon in 2050, we’d like to apply for the job of urban planner for the dark side of the moon.
